Newton Servicemens Welfare Fund Minutes

 Minutes of the NSWF committee meetings Oct 1940 to Jan 1941.

72 Newton men were on the list of those serving in the forces who were eligible to receive postal orders from the fund.

These minutes also include the amalgamation into the fund of Old Blackwell servicemen, further statements of accounts, and a count of the knitted socks, scarves and helmets to be despatched to the servicemen. So far not enough socks for the 72 on the list!

Minutes of Meeting Held Oct 16 1940 at 6.30pm


Mr R Butler presided

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and passed as correct.

A statement of Accounts showing income of £150-18-11d     £113-12-6   37-6-5

There was to hand 30 pairs of socks 2 scarves and 7 helmets

Mr Kiddy proposed , Mr Webb seconded a vote of thanks to the knitters- passed unanimously.

The name of Thomas Trussel was submitted and it was resolved this name be included in the list of the Newton Servicemen.

No of Servicemen to date was 72

The question of amalgamating the Comforts scheme with that of Old Blackwell to be left over until next meeting

It was resolved that a further allotment of 5/- be forwarded to those serving during November

The secretary was asked to communicate with the proper authorities re War Charities Act 1940.

The secretary to reply to Mr Weedon’s letter asking him to reconsider his decision  re resignation and inviting him to the next meeting

Miss Smith volunteered to collect in Sherwood Street and Mr Kidd and Mr Webb Alfreton Road . 

Next meeting to be held in the school on Wednesday November 27th at 6 p.m.

Minutes of meeting held November 27th 1940


Mr R Butler presided

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and passed as correct

A statement of accounts showing an income of £170 -16- 6 expenditure of £134 -8 -4 leaving a balance of £36-8-2  was submitted

It was considered that the above statement of accounts was satisfactory

New names of servicemen was Mr S Butler Alfreton Road Newton and Hounsell Bamford Street. 

Proposed by Mr Kiddy seconded by Mr Cotton that the name Thomas Trussel be deleted from the list. This was carried.

Proposed that the next allotment of 5/- be remitted in early December 1940. 

The Secretary to invite to the people of Old Blackwell to the next  meeting with a view to joining the Newton Comfort Fund scheme.

Resolved that the secretary write to the secretary of the CWS asking for a donation to the fund. 

Mr Cotton was asked to accept the thanks of the meeting for his gift of 500 collecting cards. This was done.

Collectors were asked to collect envelopes bearing addresses of servicemen when on their round.

Next meeting to be held January 8th 1941 at 6 p.m.

  1. Mr R Butler presided 

  2. Minutes of previous meeting were red and passed as correct .

  3. A statement of accounts showing an income of £197 -4-10d of Expenditure of £134 8 shillings and 4 pence leaving a balance of £36 8 shillings and Tuppence was submitted.It was considered that the above statement of accounts was satisfactory.

  4. Mr Marriott Mr Creswell and Mr Phelps from Old Blackwell attended the meeting and expressed a desire to join the Newton scheme on behalf of the people of old Blackwell

  5. .Mr Kiddy moved Mr Hesketh seconded that Old Blackwell be amalgamated into the Newton SCF. Passed unanimously. Mr Cresswell tended his thanks on behalf of Old Blackwell.

  6. The committee conveyed its best wishes to Mr F Ford on his being called up to the services.

  7. A collector to be found in Mr Ford's place.

  8. It was resolved that knitted garments be dispatched as soon as possible.

  9. Old Blackwell service men would come in  with the next allotment January 15th as soon as addresses came to hand.

  10.  Next meeting February 5th at 6 p.m.
